Sport HistoryCricket Read moreCricket CloseOrganised cricket at the School began in the early 1800s. A match against Sir Edmund Filmer’s XI is recorded on the local papers as having taken place in 1840. Before that, it is fairly certain that Alfred Mynn and John Willes (major figures in the history of cricket) had some influence on our boys. The School plays locally, against other schools, but has also successfully entered national competitions and toured and entertained tourists from all over the world. Most of the more memorable matches, however, have been the fiercely competitive internal ‘house’ matches, though the recent tie against Eton in a cricket match brings mixed feelings of one that ‘got away’. Whilst Oxbridge and its colleges and other universities have Old Suttonians in their numbers and counties (cricket), major professional clubs (Hockey and Rugby) have had their staff swelled by Suttonians, the school can only boast two international cricketers, Douglas Carr and Mark Benson. |
